Glutathione is the most important molecule you need to stay healthy and prevent disease. Yet you've probably never heard of it. It's the secret to prevent aging, cancer, heart disease, dementia, etc., and necessary to treat everything from autism to Alzheimer's disease.

There are more than 115,000 medical articles on glutathione on (a leading online center for biomedical research), in contrast to about 50,000 articles of vitamin C, underscoring the importance of this molecule (glutathione).

Glutathione is a very simple molecule that is produced naturally all the time in your body. It is a combination of three simple building blocks of protein or amino acids - cysteine, glycine and glutamine.

Genes involved in glutathione metabolism can be tested. These are the genes involved in producing enzymes that allow the body to create and recycle glutathione in the body. These genes have many names, such as GSTM1 (Glutathione S-transferase Mu 1), GSTP1 (glutathione S-transferase pi 1), GSTT1 (glutathione S-transferase theta 1) and more. These genes are impaired in some people for a variety of important reasons. Humans evolved in a time before the 80,000 toxic industrial chemicals found in our environment today were introduced into our world, before electromagnetic radiation was everywhere and before we polluted our skies, lakes, rivers, oceans, etc., with mercury and lead. That is why most people survived with the basic version of the genetic detoxification software encoded in our DNA, which is mediocre at ridding the body of toxins. At the time humans evolved we just didn't need more. Who knew we would be poisoning ourselves and eating a processed, nutrient-depleted and free radical-laden diet thousands of years later? The one-third of our population that suffers from chronic disease is missing this essential gene. His GSTM1 function was inadequate and he didn't produce enough glutathione as a result. Eventually, his body broke down and he became extremely ill. This is the same problem Dr. Hyman sees in so many of his patients. They are missing this critical gene and they descend into disease as a result. GSTM1 and GSTT1 are deleted in a high percentage of the human population, with major ethnic differences. Among Europeans, GSTM1 and GSTT1 deletion frequencies range from 40 to 60% and from 13 to 26%, respectively. Moreover, several studies have established a causal relationship between inappropriate functioning or absence of one or more of these genes (often referred to as detoxification genes) and high rates of cancers. This is because, the human glutathione S-transferases/ GSTs (the enzymes whose functionalities are determined by these genes) are metabolizing enzymes that play a key role in protecting against cancers by detoxifying numerous potentially cytotoxic, genotoxic and carcinogenic compounds by conjugating them to glutathione.

Free radicals are a natural byproduct of our cellular metabolic process. These free radicals pose such a threat to our health because of the damage they cause to neighboring cells. These unstable molecules are missing an electron. In an attempt to find balance they indiscriminately rip electrons from nearby cells, turning them into free radicals as well. This process snowballs, causing severe harm to our cells and interfering with normal cellular function. In fact, even if the free radical is not able to steal the electron, it may still create such a pull as to disrupt the workings of neighboring atoms and molecules.

If you are sick or old or are just not in peak shape, you likely have glutathione deficiency. One would think it would be easy just to take glutathione as a pill, but the body digests protein; so you wouldn't get the benefits if you did it this way. Oral glutathione is too fragile to survive digestion. There is therefore little or no bioavailability for standard delivery of glutathione.


For years, scientists have looked for ways to effectively raise glutathione levels. They tried to supplement with glutathione pills, but glutathione cannot be effectively absorbed through the intestinal tract. They realized that glutathione must be supplemented via its essential building blocks, the amino acids cysteine, glycine and glutamine.
